ZTA wins trophy at 8th Annual Derby Days

ZTA was announced as the winning sorority of Sigma Chi’s 8th Annual Derby Days.

The sorority collected half of the total funds raised of $8,430, breaking the chapter record for most money raised in one week, for their chosen philanthropy, Brest Cancer Awareness.

“During Derby Days fraternity boys need their servers to help out more then ever. They need us to help clean the house for events, prepare food for visitors, and sometimes help to organize games or activities as well,” said Chloe Smithson, fraternity server for Sigma Chi.

The week-long event benefited Sigma Chi’s chosen philanthropy, the Huntsman Cancer Institute and Zeta Tau Alpha’s philanthropy Breast Cancer Awareness.

Sororities and free agents on campus were invited to take part in Derby Days by competing in multiple events throughout the week. Penny Wars, Daily Double Drawing, Paint the Cross, and Canned Food Drive were the events that took place everyday.

Monday’s events consisted of the legendary Derby Hat Chase, the first annual Darling Derby Competition and the Painted Banner Competition.

Derbylympics was held on Tuesday, followed by Sign-A-Sig and Jousting on Wednesday. The Joust Tournament was played by bracket in single elimination, one-on-one rounds between girls of different sororities in the inflatable jousting ring.

“I cheered on every girl that played and because we did have such a good cheering section, we won the points given out for crowd participation!” said Julie Ewoldt, Chi Omega pledge.

Gold for Huntsman and the Brother Auction were the following events held on Thursday.

Brother Auction, a particularly favorited event among the sorority sisters and fraternity servers that auctioned the brothers of Sigma Chi to the highest bidder.

“The brothers who were auctioned off to the highest bidder are ‘on call’ for a week. Meaning they have to do what the buyer wants. All in good taste, of course. They are not allowed to make the auctioned brother use any money or take part in anything illegal. However, cleaning cars, rooms, and apartments, cooking dinner, and other chore-like things are all fair game. Some of the brothers bring more to the table so we always see said brothers go for higher prices,” said Jake Hershberger, Sigma Chi brother.

To bring the entire week’s worth of work to an end, Celebration and Trophy Presentation was held Friday night at 11:00 p.m. announcing ZTA as the 8th Annual Derby Days winner.
