The UTM Women’s Center continued their Lunchtime Speaker series on Tuesday, March 12 by hosting Psychology Professor Dr. Angie MacKewn.
This was the first in this series to be hosted in their newly renovated center in the Paul Meek Library.
MacKewn
The types of yoga that MacKewn focused on were mainly about restoration and helping change the way women live daily.
She discussed the many benefits that can be found from breathing right during the day, which are typically taught during a yoga session. By breathing correctly and deeply, women can build better cardiovascular and circulatory health, better control of blood pressure and blood sugar, as well as potentially reduce migraine flare-ups.
MacKewn is an instructor at the TR Yoga, LLC studio in Martin. She discussed the techniques that they focus on in their classes and how much of what is done in yoga can be modified for in the office for a quick break or to try and boost the heart rate throughout the day.
Raelyn Childres, a senior Psychology major from Memphis, had never attended an event hosted by the Women’s Center.
“I enjoyed learning about the simple techniques we could do to improve our postures and breathing, ” Childres said. “I never knew just being a woman put so much strain on our bodies, but I’m glad I was able to gain some insight on how to improve my health.”
TR Yoga, LLC is open to the public and has classes nearly every day of the week for every type of person and every skill level in yoga.
UTM’s Women’s Center is hosting many events for the month of March and Women’s History Month. Information including locations, times, and event information can be found on their Facebook page: UTM Women’s Center.
