Woman dies in Martin fire

DSCF6271EU A 50-year-old woman died during an apartment fire Tuesday afternoon, the cause of which is still under investigation, said Martin Police Capt. Don Teal.

Marta Willoughby died in a fire at 303 Olive Street and the cause of death is still undetermined. Willoughby was found unresponsive in Apt. B and was taken outside by Martin Fire Department personnel. Willoughby was declared deceased after CPR performed by EMS personnel was unsuccessful, according to the police report.

DSCF6270EUAround 1:20 p.m. Martin Fire Dept. personnel were dispatched to a structure fire. They arrived to see heavy smoke coming from the residence, and entered and located the victim. Martin PD CID, along with the TBI, ATF, and Tennessee Bomb and Arson were called to the scene and initiated an unattended death investigation. The incident is still under investigation. Teal says the fire started downstairs in the triplex apartment and it is unsure at this time how it was started.

DSCF6275EUAll remaining residents escaped without injury, according to the press release. The Pacer will continue to follow this story as more information becomes available.
