There is an air of excitement around junior right-handed pitcher Nick Wohlbold of the UTM baseball team, who has been named to several honorable lists prior to the Skyhawks taking to the diamond for the 2020 season.
According to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC), Wohlbold is expected to do great things this year.
The NCBWA honored UTM’s star relief pitcher with Preseason All-American Honors, the first ever for UTM’s baseball program. Wohlbold was named to the second team following a phenomenal sophomore season that saw the pitcher out of Colombia, Missouri save 13 (11th in NCAA) games and strike out 44 batters over 32.5 innings to go along with a 3.03 ERA.
Out of the 24 spots on the NCBWA’s Preseason All-American list, only eight come from non-power five conferences (Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference, Pacific-12 Conference and Southeastern Conference being the power-five). Wohlbold is the only player to come out of the OVC, according to Sports Information.
Naturally, Wohlbold also made the OVC preseason list as well. Wohlbold is also the only relief pitcher nominated to that list, per Sports Information.
The NCBWA further recognized Wohlbold by adding him to the preseason watch list for Stopper of the Year, an award that is given annually to the best closer in Division-I baseball. The only other OVC player to join Wohlbold is Corley Woods out of Jacksonville State.
Wohlbold will be tasked with leading a young core of Skyhawks that includes 16 freshmen on the roster. Last season, the Skyhawks went 25-31 overall and 12-18 in OVC play.
UTM will begin the 2020 campaign Feb. 14 when they travel to Birmingham, Alabama to take on Saint Louis.
