Violence and a toxic political climate are currently plaguing the community we live in and more broadly speaking, the entire United States.
On Saturday, Oct. 27, a mass shooting took place at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Â According to USA Today, authorities said that a man named Rob Browers, 46, stormed into the synagogue and took 11 lives in his 20-minute attack on the congregation. Attorney Scott Brady is seeking the death penalty on Browers.
More recently and closer to home, police had to temporarily close down the westbound ramp of I-24 in Murfreesboro on Monday, Oct. 30. According to WSMV News Channel 4, a man named Fermin Viveros Leon was stopped by police on the on-ramp to I-24. When police searched his vehicle, the officers found an explosive device, which has since been detonated safely by the Tennessee Highway Patrol’s Special Operations Unit. Leon was stopped after a woman told police that Leon assaulted her and that he could possibly have weapons and an explosive device.
The world is, unfortunately, a very violent and toxic place, especially in regards to the condition of the current political climate. We at The Pacer do not condone any kind of unwarranted, malicious violence. If ideas need to be asserted through violence, they are bad ideas. The Pacer also does not support racism, antisemitism or any kind of prejudice towards those who are different.
While world peace may be impossible, we can all be nice and respectful towards one another. We don’t need to resort to violence to solve our problems. Violence only serves to cause more problems. We can only hope that justice is served towards violent criminals and the suspects involved. Please be careful out there. And remember what your mom said, “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.”
