I often ask why the events of homecoming are not more welcoming.
Each year we have events like a rope pull and pyramid for Greek Life; Homecoming Court elections for the student groups; and other festivities students not in specific groups can only be in the audience of, not participate in. As students, we all know the struggle of busy lives. We are loaded down with classes, jobs, homework, etc., which does not leave much time for extracurriculars. I personally know a variety of people who do not participate in extracurriculars simply because time management is not as easy for everyone on a day-to-day basis.
Even though students do not participate in certain groups, why can’t they run for Homecoming Court? Why can’t they get a group of friends together and participate in the rope pull? Why do they have to pay to go watch the step show or only be an audience member for the pyramid?
At this point, homecoming seems like one large popularity week.
One slight change that has recently happened was a group, Dangerously Divine, competed in the lip sync event and absolutely stole the show. That is how it should be, equal and inclusive. Early planning and signing up for these events could easily be a solution to the seclusion.
In my opinion, all these events should be open for everyone to promote inclusion for all students, despite what clubs or organizations they are or are not in. College is about making memories, having fun and finding out more about yourself. By participating in homecoming, there are so many opportunities for students to have a good time, make friends and have a friendly competition with fellow Skyhawks.
I understand the idea of sticking to tradition and not straying from what is normally done, but what is wrong with change? In this instance, change is needed. Inclusion is needed.
Opinions about this will most likely differ, but at the end of the day, homecoming should be a great time for all students, not just the cliques.
