The Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges ceremony and reception took place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, 2014 at Watkins Auditorium. Students there were by invite only, and they were allowed to bring family and friends along with them.
Welcome and introductions by Coordinator for Student Organizations Katie Smith and Director of University Center John Abel started the event, and then there was a welcome from Chancellor Dr. Tom Rakes. This was followed up by a welcome from Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Dr. Margaret Toston.
The presentation of the Who’s Who Awards then began and about 66 students at UTM received a Who’s Who Award. Community Service Awards were given next and they were given in two different levels. The silver level was given to organizations with 250 hours of community service, and the winner of this was music fraternity Phi Mu Alpha. The other level was gold and was given to organizations with 500 or more hours of community service, and the winner of this award was League of Striving Artists.
The next award given was the Student Leader of the Year Award, and the nominees were Miranda Rutan, Laura Miller and Krysten Harris. The winner of the award was Harris with Student Members of the American Chemical Society.
The next award was Student Organization Advisor of the Year Award, and the nominees were Dr. Jeff Hoyer, Kyoko Hammond and Jason Stout and the winner was Hammond who is the Japanese Language and Culture Club Advisor.
The next award was Student Organization Event of the Year Award, and the nominees were Diversity Night held by the Japanese Language and Culture Club, Tennessee Safari Park Mural Painting held by League of Striving Artists and Roots of Rhythm held by UTM Percussion Society. The winner was Roots of Rhythm help by the UTM Percussion Society.
The last award of the night was Student Organization of the Year Award, and the nominees were League of Striving Artists, SHAPE Club and Black Student Association. The winner was League of Striving Artists.
Closing statements were given and then a reception was held in the lobby of the Bowling University Center.
