Voice It!: SGA Elections are coming soon; what do you want to see in 2014

voiceitlogoOnce again it is time for SGA Elections. Listed below are the links to the stories that lists both party’s platforms.

While The Pacer has decided to give its full support to The Real Deal Party by an Editorial Board majority vote, I would like it to be known that I personally do not support either party. I think that there are things on both platforms that should be closely looked at and questioned.

First, what exactly are the unnecessary fees that the Real Deal Party is referring to and who exactly determines how they will be better allocated to help students? Will the students be asked about these fees or how they feel they would receive the most benefit from them?

To be fair, I certainly question the YOUniversity Party’s platform listing that they want to change or lower the Student Publication’s fee. For some reason there seems to be a misconception out there that this is a yearbook fee and it is definitely not. The Student Publication’s fee covers three publications, BeanSwitch, The Pacer and The Spirit. BeanSwitch is the literary and visual arts magazine that publishes an edition in the spring and fall. The Pacer is the student newspaper. It is an online and print publication. The Pacer also produces several special edition magazines in cooperation with The Spirit magazine. Currently the special edition magazines consist of the “Commencement Issue” and the “Taking Flight Issue.” The Student Publication fee was already voluntarily cut from $8.50 to $7.00 and Student Publications has already given Campus Recreation $100,000 this year. We can’t stand any more cuts without cutting services to you, the UTM students.

I’m sure that both parties would like to hear what you have to say about their platforms and what you would like to see happen on the UTM campus in 2014, and frankly so would I.

Do you strongly agree with a particular party’s platform or strongly disagree with a particular party’s platform?

Is there a particular issue on a particular party’s platform that you strongly agree with or strongly disagree with?

Are you interested in issues that are not addressed in either platform?

If so, what in particular would you like to see happen in 2014?

  1. I would just like to point out that the pacer received so many views yesterday because of a drug bust in Martin. Post your views on any given week. The only news that has been reported recently that has even been acknowledged has been anything scandal related and that hasn’t been often.

  2. Cutting the Publications Fee wouldn’t be cutting printed publications; it would cut out student jobs.

As a student journalist at UTM, I’ve gained valuable experience that has helped me gain the experience needed to already land a job in my field. We also serve as an informational asset to not only the UTM community, but the region and state as well.

Yesterday, we had over 11,000 views on our website. Think about it. That’s about twice as many views than UTM has students, and it’s because we truly inform the entire public about news coverage, including breaking news. Legitimate news sources often request material from us, because we do our jobs and we have learned how to do that through our jobs within Student Publications.

People wouldn’t be going to our website if we weren’t doing our jobs with coverage. We aren’t perfect, but that’s the reason why we use The Pacer to gain experience. Clearly we are doing something right.
