With upcoming introduction of the newly named Athletic  Director at UTM, Julio Freire, I’ve been thinking about what changes that the students at UTM can expect to see. This is not that article. That article will be coming shortly though!
This is a list of three things that should be on the new AD’s agenda.
3. Finish the stadium that was supposed to be done this year
After all the rumblings of a financial shortfall, it’s understandable why the stadium project didn’t take place this year. However, this is a project that needs to happen in 2014. If UTM wants to host an FCS playoff game in the near future, this project needs to be complete so they can get a game. Plus, I’m sure the Skyhawks football team, as well as the kids at Westview, would love it.
2. Female golf team
When the new golf center was unveiled to the public back in October, several people who spoke suggested the possibility of the addition of a female team. With the new center, which was supposedly built to house two teams, now up and running I think it’s time. Coach Jerry Carpenter has done an excellent job with the men’s team. This should only help an already attractive golf program grow and reach success.
1. More student involvement
The athletics at UTM has a lot of support from alumni, parents, and just plain members of the community. However, the attendance of UTM students at UTM has been terribly. I have been at nearly every home football and basketball game over the last year, and it isn’t getting any better. It appeared there was more of an emphasis put on this at the end of Phil Dane’s run as AD, but the results were not there.
There are plenty things in athletics that need to be addressed, but these are just three that come to my mind. If you have any suggestions, or comments, please put them in comment box below!
