The UTM Wind Ensemble was joined by the Henry County High School (HCHS) Band on Tuesday, Feb. 26, for a side-by-side concert.
The evening began at the Skyhawk Fieldhouse at 6 p.m. with the Henry County High School Band under the direction of Kyle Graves. The band performed three pieces: “Symphonic Chorale for Concert Band,” “Salvation is Created” and “Rough Riders.”
“It is an honor to have been invited to participate in this event with the Department of Music at UT Martin,” said Graves. “It is always a pleasure to work with Dr. Julie Hill and Dr. John Oelrich.”
Following the HCHS Band was the UTM Wind Ensemble. The first piece performed by the Wind Ensemble was “Variations on ‘America,'” conducted by Steve Barnett, the Coordinator for the Office of Educational Outreach at UTM.
The following two pieces, “Miniatures Brasileiras” and “Magnolia Star,” were conducted by Dr. John Oelrich, Director of Bands at UTM.
The evening concluded with the HCHS Band joining the UTM Wind Ensemble to perform “Encanto,” conducted by Graves.
Jack Mergen, a fourth-year Clarinet Pedagogy major from Mayfield, performed in the concert with the HCHS Band.
“This is always a great experience to get to know other young students who might potentially be interested in coming to UT Martin,” said Mergen. “I hope to see a lot of them in the future.”
The Wind Ensemble has been performing side-by-side concerts with high school bands since 2013.
