UTM’s softball team dropped its third straight contest, falling to Southeastern Conference foe Mississippi State by a score of 6-0.
The Skyhawks (12-10) proved to be overmatched against the Bulldogs with just one hit and a pair of errors. Chelsey Gore posted the team’s lone base knock.
All three pitchers saw action in the contest with Seeley Layne (2-4) earning a loss in her first start of the season. Layne allowed zero earned runs over two innings of work while scattering three hits. Erin Gallagher appeared in relief, allowing two earned runs in 1.1 innings while Hannah Ridolfi tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless action.
After a big game in yesterday’s contest, Carter Spexarth picked up where she left off with a two-run home run down the left field line to take an early lead in the bottom of the first. Mississippi State added to its margin in the bottom of the third on a solo home run by Mia Davidson before a double by Chloe Malau’ulu pushed the margin out to four runs.
Two more runs would cross the plate for the Bulldogs in the fourth inning to cap the day’s scoring on RBIs by Davidson and Spexarth.
UTM will return to action at the Skyhawk Hampton Inn Classic on March 13-15 at Bettye Giles Field.
