UTM soars into OVC semifinal against Eastern Kentucky

The UTM soccer team will wrap up their season over the Nov. 3 and 4 weekend, hoping to come back to school Monday, Nov. 5 as OVC champions.

The team ended their season very strong, finishing out their schedule on a six-game winning streak. Furthermore, the team has not lost a game since Sept. 2, when they fell 0-2 at sister school UT Knoxville.

Following that game, UTM won five in a row, then tied Eastern Illinois 0-0 on Sept. 30.

Next came the aforementioned winning streak, defeating Murray State, Jacksonville State, Belmont, Austin Peay, Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State to end the regular season. In fact, UTM is technically undefeated in the OVC, going 9-0-1, with Eastern Illinois of coming in next as the closest, forcing a tie.

The leading scorer for UTM this season was senior Amy McGivern, who finished the season with 31 shots on goal and 13 goals.

McGivern’s shots on goal from the 2017 season were almost identical, with 30, but her goals scored shows great improvement from last season where she finished with four.

Sophomore Erica Myers returned this year as the leading goalie for the Skyhawks, where last season as a freshman she garnered 85 saves, this season Myers had 29 saves.

That stat is a little misleading however, because Myers only played in 13 games this season, whereas last season she played in 19. Those six missing games likely would have given her far more than 29 saves.

Number one ranked UTM will face off on Friday, Nov. 2 against number four Eastern Kentucky. The Skyhawks defeated the Colonels 3-1 exactly two weeks before.

If they win, UTM will then play the winner of the semifinal between number two ranked Murray State and number three, Eastern Illinois, whose game is also on Nov. 2 at 4 p.m.

UTM’s semifinal game against EKU will take place at the Skyhawk Soccer Field, and if UTM wins, the OVC championship game will also be held there.

UTM’s semifinal game Friday, Nov. 2, will begin at 7 p.m., and the championship game will take place on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 2 p.m.
