This semester, UTM is taking extra steps to keep their students healthy and well by implementing a new online report system called Hawk Alerts.
This service can be used in the case of concerning behavior.
If you notice that someone around you has been showing signs of depression or destructive thoughts, you can file a Hawk Alert online. Within 24 hours, your report will be sent to the corresponding resident assistants and professors, and a decision on how to handle the situation will be made. Depending on the severity of the report, the person in question may be routinely checked on by students and faculty around them. However, if the situation is more severe, the student may be either contacted directly or referred to other resources such as therapy.
While these reports are helpful, they are not always the correct solution, as Hawk Alerts are not to be filed as a solution for immediate issues. If someone you know has made imminent threats to themselves or others, Campus Safety and Security encourages you to call 911.
To fill out a Hawk Alert, go to care.utm.edu and in the bottom right side of the page, there will be a graphic that will link you to the form. From there, you can provide information about the person’s behavior and link any digital files that attribute to your worry about the person’s well-being. You can link your personal information to the report, or you can choose to stay anonymous.
UTM will also be providing suicide prevention training between Sept. 10 and 14. More details about this training will be out soon.
