The fall portion of the 2020-21 UTM rifle schedule came to a close over the weekend as the Skyhawks clashed against Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) rival Jacksonville State in a pair of matches.
The weekend began with a Saturday matchup as UTM fell by a 4,659-4,566 margin before the teams reconvened for a matchup the next day. Despite a pair of career-high scores and three season-high tallies, the Skyhawks were defeated 4,654-4,578 on Sunday.
Jennifer Plocinik carried UTM in air rifle and aggregate scoring in both matches this weekend while Rachel Sprague led the way in smallbore during both matchups.
On Saturday, the Skyhawks posted 2,261 points in smallbore and 2,305 points in air rifle. The smallbore scoring lineup consisted of Sprague (570), Plocinik (567), Kalen Royal (563), Nick Fares (561) and Jacob Osborne (554). Plocinik’s 581 paced the air rifle lineup, which was rounded out by Sprague (577), Fares (575), Osborne (572) and Abigail Donald (556).
Two relays took place on Saturday as Rachel Mills (523 smallbore, 548 air rifle), Amanda Mayo (491 smallbore, 548 air rifle), Celia Gelpey (501 smallbore, 534 air rifle) and Royal (550 air rifle) also represented UTM.
Sunday’s smallbore tally improved to 2,284 while the Skyhawks dialed up 2,294 points in air rifle. Sprague’s season-high 577 topped the smallbore scoring and was followed by Plocinik (573), Osborne (career-best 572), Royal (562) and Fares (553). In air rifle, Plocinik registered a career-best 587 for the third time this season while Sprague (575), Fares (572), Donald (560) and Osborne (552) comprised the scoring lineup.
Competing individually, Mayo shattered her season-high scores in both smallbore (539) and air rifle (561).
UTM will step away from official competition for two months before returning in an official capacity on Sunday, Jan. 17 when it takes on Ohio State for a neutral site showdown in Murray, Kentucky.
