UTM men’s baseball schedule released

The 2019 schedule for UTM’s men’s baseball team has been released.

UTM’s regular season kicks off on Friday, Feb. 15, with a four-game series against the South Dakota State (SDSU) Jackrabbits. All four games will be played at the Skyhawk baseball field from Feb. 15-17, with a doubleheader on Feb. 16.

Following the SDSU series, the Skyhawks will travel south to Florence, Alabama to face the University of North Alabama (UNA) Lions in a three-game series from Feb. 22-24.

Two days after the UNA series on Feb. 26, the Skyhawks will play one game against heavyweight SEC foe Ole Miss, who went 48-17-0 in 2018.

The men’s team will begin the month of March in Kennesaw, Georgia, to take on the Kennesaw State Owls. The Skyhawks and Owls will play each other in a three-game series from March 1-3, with all three games taking place in Kennesaw.

The Skyhawks will face their second SEC opponent on March 5 and 6, when they travel to Auburn, Alabama, to take on the Tigers.

UTM will begin OVC play when they take on the Southeast Missouri (SEMO) Redhawks from March 8-10, in a three-game series. All three games will be played in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The Skyhawks went 1-2 against the Redhawks in 2018 in Martin.

The Skyhawks will then travel to Huntsville, Alabama, to play against the Alabama A&M (AA&M) Bulldogs on March 12.

After a 13-away game streak, the Skyhawks will finally return home on March 15, to battle another OVC opponent, the Belmont Bruins. The Skyhawks lost all three games against Belmont last year, although each were by three runs or less.

The Skyhawks will play AA&M on March 19, in Martin, before traveling to Richmond, Kentucky, to play against another OVC rival, the Eastern Kentucky Colonels. The Skyhawks didn’t fare well against the Colonels last season, as UTM lost in all three games in the series.

After returning from Richmond, the Skyhawks will play four-straight games at home, with Division II school Union University coming on March 27, and OVC rival Morehead State playing March 29-31, in a three-game series. UTM lost by large margins in all three games against Morehead State last season.

The month of April will begin with a game in Evansville, Indiana, against the University of Evansville Aces.

Afterwards, the Skyhawks will travel to Birmingham, Alabama, to take on Samford University in a three-game series April 5-7.

Christian Brothers University will take on the Skyhawks in Martin on April 10.

UTM will resume OVC play against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) April 12-14, in a three-game series, followed by a rematch with Union, though this time in Jackson. UTM had a good outing against SIUE last season, going 2-1 against the Cougars.

After the rematch with Union, the Skyhawks will take on the Austin Peay Governors at home in another three-game OVC series April 18-20. UTM went 1-2 last season against the Governors.

Following the series against Austin Peay, UTM will have three more non-OVC games left. The Skyhawks will play Evansville again on April 24, in Martin, Lipscomb on April 30, in Nashville and the University of Memphis in Millington on May 14.

As for the remaining OVC matchups, the Skyhawks will play three games against Eastern Illinois in Charleston, Illinois, April 26-28, three games against Jacksonville State in Martin May 3-5, three games against Murray State in Murray, Kentucky, May 10-12 and three games against Tennessee Tech in Martin May 16-18.

The OVC Baseball Championship will be held in Marion, Illinois, May 21-26.
