UTM golf produces best tournament score of their season

The UTM golf team shot its best 54-hole score of the season at the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate, finishing fourth out of 14 teams in the tournament held at Hermitage Golf Club.

The Skyhawks closed out the tournament with a score of 856 (+4), which was two strokes better than their previous season-best tally of 858 at the SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational on Sept. 24-25. UT Martin posted a 286 (+2) during today’s third round after consecutive rounds of 285 yesterday.

“This tournament was a good way to wind up the regular season,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “Considering the elements, we put together two great scores yesterday. Today’s weather was perfect and 2-over par was a good, solid round. I am proud that we could end the regular season on a high note.”

Pacing UTM today was Nick Wolf’s 68 (-3), which was the third-best score in the 87-man field. Ross Redmont was also under par today with a 70 (-1) while Cameron Smith (73, +2) and Jack Story (75, +4) rounded out the scoring lineup. In addition, Mason Chandler shot a 77 (+6) today as part of the five-man Skyhawk team.

Playing as individuals, Tate Chumley fired an even-par 71 today while Peyton Dix carded a 75 (+4).

For the tournament, Story and Redmont each tied for ninth place with a final tally of 213 (E). Story ranked second in the field in par-5 scoring (4.67, -3) and made a team-high eight birdies on the way to his best finish of the season and sixth top-10 career finish. Redmont ranked third in the tournament in par-4 scoring (3.91, -3) and was boosted by a team-best 42 pars for his fifth top-10 finish of the season (ninth in the last two years).

Wolf made one of the biggest leaps up the individual standings following his dominant third round, as the sophomore jumped 16 spots to place 16th with a 214 (+1). Smith finished with a 217 (+4) while the trio of Dix (222, +9), Chandler (223, +10) and Chumley (223, +10) were each separated by one shot.

The Skyhawks will now turn their focus to the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Championships, which will be held on April 21-23. The 54-hole event is once again being played at The Shoals on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Muscle Shoals, AL.
