UTM golf inks a pair of in-state standouts as part of national signing day

UTM head golf coach Austin Swafford has announced two additions as Garrett Chumley and Cayden Chambers have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Skyhawks next season.

Chumley hails from Murfreesboro and recently capped off a remarkable prep career under head coach Shayne Martin at Oakland High School. He is currently ranked sixth in the Tennessee Class of 2021 on the Junior Golf Scoreboard and was an All-Area Player of the Year for three straight years (2018-20).

A three-time top-10 finisher at the TSSAA Championship, Chumley’s best career finish came during his senior season as he finished third in the field after carding scores of 68-67. He claimed medalist honors at the Region 4 and District 7 championship tournaments in both his sophomore and senior years.

On the Sneds Tour, Chumley boasts two wins and 11 career top-10 finishes in Masters Tournaments. Recently, he won the Sneds Tour Open with a 67 at Old Fort Golf Course in September.

Chumley will join his older brother Tate on the 2021-22 UTM roster, as they will become the first brothers to suit up for the Skyhawk golf program since Tyler and Gavin Shellnut in 2013-14.

“Garrett is the kind of player that can come in and make an immediate impact on our team,” Swafford said. “He has the game and ability to score well and shoot a low number. He has great poise and character – we are excited for him to be a Skyhawk.”

Chambers put the finishing touches on a standout career at Waverly Central High School under head coach Kevin Rawlings. Chambers was the only player in school history to participate in the TSSAA Championship in all four years, finishing in the top-four in each of his final two seasons (71-76 as a junior, fourth place; 71-73 as a senior, second place). He is currently ranked 12th in the Tennessee Class of 2021 on the Junior Golf Scoreboard.

Chambers was the Region 5 medalist during both his freshman and senior seasons, also capturing the District 9 individual championship in back-to-back seasons (2019-20). He was named a Tennessee Sports Writers Association all-state honoree in 2019.

This summer, Chambers pieced together impressive finishes in a pair of prestigious tournaments. He won the HJGT Old Fort Junior Open with rounds of 70-74 in August while also placing third in the HJGT College Prep Series at Vanderbilt (78-71).

“Cayden is going to be a great fit for UTM,” Swafford said. “He’s a small-town guy who will do very well in our program. I think he flew under the radar a bit and we can’t wait to have him on our team and competing.”

Chumley and Chambers become Swafford’s first two signees as Skyhawk head coach, as he took over the reigns of the program in July after spending seven total seasons with the program (four as a student-athlete, three as an assistant).
