UTM Arts Inservice

The UTM Department of Visual and Theatre Arts will host its third-annual in-service workshops from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m on Saturday, Sept. 29 in the Fine Arts building.

The workshops, designed for K-12 teachers of art, dance and theatre, has 60 spaces available. The seats are on a first-come, first-served basis and the event is free of charge. Seats must be reserved by Sept. 24, and interested teachers must also designate first or second choice workshops for each session. These placements are also on a first-come, first-served basis.

Workshop sections will be divided into three parts: A, B and C. Attendees will sign in starting at 9 a.m.

Session A will commence at 9:30 a.m. and include discussions on practices for the K-5 classroom, monoprints and drawing, online instructional technology in art teaching, voice and movement methods in theatre, and abstraction and printmaking on clay.

Session B will begin at 11 a.m. This session will feature workshops for practices in grades 6-12 classrooms, new Tennessee dance standard domains, monoprints and drawing, kente cloth for elementary students, basket weaving, and clay sculpture.

Lunch will be at 12:20 and Session C will commence shortly after at 1 p.m.

This workshop will touch on digital images, devices and opportunities, basket weaving, abstraction, group movement and rhythm-based dance in theatre.

Dr. Carol Eckert, professor of art at UTM, expects around 40 to sign up for the in-service.

“These K-12 Arts professionals are dedicated teachers who inspire their students every day,” says Eckert.

“Our in-service gives them a chance to get together in workshops focused on the arts and their areas.  We have teachers coming from thirteen different counties who ordinarily don’t have a chance to meet and talk to each other and this in-service gives them a place to learn, share and refresh in the company of their peers. I can’t help but think that can only have a positive impact on their students.”

Interested teachers must send their name, contact information and workshop preferences to Dr. Eckert at ceckert@utm.edu. For more information on individual sessions, contact the UTM Office of Visual and Theatre Arts at 731-881-7400.
