UTM partners with Naifeh Center

UTM has partnered with the Naifeh Center for Effective Leadership to offer up to six hours of college credit for completion of the Tennessee Certified Public Manager (CPM) Program beginning in Fall 2019.

The CPM program, based in the Naifeh Center, is now entering its second year of existence. The Naifeh Center is an agency for the UT Institute for Public Service located in Knoxville.

The credit will be applied to students majoring in Political Science with a concentration in Public Administration.

The purpose of the CPM program is to provide a development program for all managers who want to manage in the public sector. Participants will work to improve their leadership skills and increase their knowledge in the field they are currently working in.

“We are hoping to see more community and business leaders enroll in this program to become more effective in their roles,” Dr. Keith Carver, chancellor of UTM, said. “We also hope to inspire participants to continue their studies with us and receive a degree.”

The National Certified Manager Program helps to provide the subject matter and serves as the accrediting body for the Tennessee CPM program.

The current program is a year in length but only requires participants to meet in the classroom 12 times. Participants will work in the classroom to complete different assignments that are designed to improve management skills in the public sector. To finish, participants must complete a cumulative project that shows what they learned throughout the program.

“We have collaborated with several programs from the UT Institute for Public Service for the past twenty years,” Carver said. “This initiative is the latest development, but the first that results in academic credit.”

As of now, the CPM program has classes being held in Nashville and Knoxville, which will run till the end of this year. Registration for this program can be found on their website.
