The UT Martin Aviators Marching Band is a continuously growing family of musicians from all backgrounds. The band currently has an enrollment of 86 members. These musicians come from different band programs, and most of them aren’t even music majors.
“I estimate around 80% or so of our students in the marching band are non-majors”, Mr. Steve Barnett, Interim Chair of the Music Department, explained. The band consists of tight-knit woodwind, brass, percussion and color guard members.
A common misconception among prospective marching band members is that they need an immense amount of past musical experience and a lot of free time. With the Aviators, this is not the case.
“We want students to know that marching band here is not a huge commitment. It is simply for fun. Students do not need to be musical prodigies to join. In fact, there is no audition to join, just a google form,” Mr. Barnett said. College marching band requires less time commitment. The Aviators rehearse twice a week for four hours total.
The marching band is a great opportunity for students to wind down after a long day of classes and stress. Musicians get to soak up some sun while making music together.
“My favorite part about being in the marching band is the people,” Samantha Upshaw, a freshman clarinet player and biology major, said. The relationships built in the band last a lifetime.
“My favorite part about leading the marching band is seeing the band progress as the season goes on and watching musicians come together and form lasting relationships,” Daniel Capua, Aviators Drum Major, said.
All in all, marching band is a great way to get out there and make music and friends.
“Collegiate marching band is different. It’s really fun and easygoing,” Dr. John Oelrich, Director of Bands, said.
If students want to join, they can fill out the Aviators Marching Band registration form at www.utm.edu. Interested musicians can also follow the marching band on Instagram @utmaviatorsmarchingband.

I agree as a student athlete in middle school i was both in band and apart of all the sports teams. In high school i missed band and circled back to it in college. I now play in my free time for fun a lot like the marching band. Music can solve the problems that you cant.
