Underrated artists you should know

It’s difficult to find new music, and a lot of times I feel burnt out by a lot of the playlists on Apple Music or Spotify.

I consume a lot of music, according to my Apple Music replay, 211 hours already in 2021 to be exact. I also don’t discriminate against genres, so I have curated a list of a few artists that are highly underrated that you should know about, as well as some songs to start you out with.

If you like a little soul in your country music, Marcus King is the man for you. Apple Music has him labeled as a rock musician. However, I have to politely disagree with them. Even though there is soul and rock influence, it is obviously most heavily influenced by the country genre. If you enjoy the sound of Tyler Childers and Sturgill Simpson, then I think you should check Marcus King out.

Songs to listen to are “No Pain,” “Wildflowers and Wine,” “Beautiful Stranger” and “One Day She’s Here.”

Imagine this: You’re living in the ’70s driving out West in a convertible on a beautiful afternoon. That is how Black Pumas makes me feel. It is the epitome of feel-good music and this group brightens my day instantly when I put them on. They’re a quirky alternative group that moves you back in time. Add these gems to your backroads playlist and I promise you won’t regret it: “Black Moon Rising,” “Colors,” “Know You Better” and “Fire.”

I know Jack Harlow has grown in popularity because of his hit “What’s Poppin,” but this man has some hidden gems that a lot of people don’t know about. I refuse to let him be a one-hit-wonder, so here are a few of my favorites by the Louisville rapper you may not know about: “Face of My City (feat. Lil Baby),” “Keep It Light,” “Creme,” “THRU THE NIGHT (feat. Bryson Tiller),” “WALK IN THE PARK” AND “WARSAW (feat. 2forwOyNE).”

I think Mac Ayers is probably the most underrated artist on my list. Lyrically and vocally, Mac Ayers is something extremely rare. His soul and rhythm have something that you don’t find in many artists. If you like R&B music, he will quickly become one of your new favorites. His music truly speaks for itself.

Songs to listen to include “S*** Covered In Gold (feat. Tiffany Gouche),” “Fears (feat. Uhmeer),” “Come Thru (feat. 9th Wonder),” “Walking Home,” “Get To You Again,” “I’ve Always Been” and “Next To You.”

Sir has grown in popularity some in the last month with the power of Twitter. However, his talent is still extremely underrated in the R&B community. His ability to stretch his vocals to find the perfect fit for his instrumentals is amazing. His music is nothing short of beautiful; it makes you feel all emotions in the best way possible.

Songs to listen to are “John Redcorn,” “You Can’t Save Me,” “New Sky (feat. Kadhja Bonet),” “Something Foreign (feat. Schoolboy Q)” and “You Ain’t Ready (feat. D Smoke).”
