A UTM student and a well-known community member were killed in a motorcycle accident south of Martin early Saturday morning, Oct. 12.
Logan Hughes, 23, a senior Computer Science major from Newbern, and Daniel Fitzgerald, 46, the general manager of the Opera House restaurant in Martin, were riding a 1999 Honda VF7 on Parkers Levee Road when the accident occurred.
According to a Tennessee Highway Patrol report, the men were traveling south on Parkers Levee and, while negotiating a left curve, the motorcycle went off the righthand side of the road, went down an embankment, and hit a tree. Both men were thrown from the motorcycle; Hughes was wearing a helmet and Fitzgerald was not wearing one, according to the report.
Hughes also worked for the Opera House as a server and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity at UTM.
The time of the accident is not yet known, according to the report. Unconfirmed information from Facebook shows that the two men were last seen about midnight Friday, Oct. 11, and that later they were considered missing, then were found at the accident site Saturday night.
The Pacer will update this story as information is confirmed.
