Troye Sivan’s Bloom: It’s a Yes from Me

After almost three years since he released his first album, Blue Neighborhood, Troye Sivan has finally dropped his sophomore album Bloom, and it is nowhere near disappointing.

While the Australian pop singer held true to his style of dreamy pop music, he was able to experiment with new sounds and stories.

Compared to Blue Neighborhood’s youthful and melancholy themes of coming of age and heartbreak, Sivan took the tracks on Bloom in a more sensual and intimate direction.

During the time between albums, Sivan has done a lot of growing up, and it shows in his music.

His first track, “Seventeen”, details a sexual experience he had with an older man while underage. Despite the song’s relatively upbeat vibes, the lyrics tell a story of predation, but still one of love from Sivan’s perspective. The lyrics paint a vivid reflection of teenage curiosity and naivete without glamorizing or condemning the theme, which I personally enjoyed. This decision made the song feel like an honest moment of reminiscence, rather than an upsetting memory or indulgent fantasy. Overall, the beat and simplicity of the chorus make the song extremely pleasing to listen to despite the darker lyrics.

His second track is his single “My, My My.” The track is much more dance-oriented than most of his previous songs, and it feels much more confident in both the lyrics and the production. The lyrics promote living in the moment and loving freely as if it’s the last time. The passion expressed makes this song uplifting to listen to, and I recommend it to anyone who needs a pick-me-up.

I think my favorite song from “Bloom” is “The Good Side”, another pre-released single. The Good Side” is a heartfelt song about a past breakup. There’s no bitterness or longing represented in the song, instead, the lyrics show Sivan’s understanding that he did not feel as much pain as his partner, as well as optimism for both of their futures.Sivan’s smooth vocals coupled with the prominent acoustic guitar riffs provide a feeling of warmth to the song that is incredibly beautiful and therapeutic to listen to.

Sivan’s new album “Bloom” is an absolute treat. His heartfelt writing makes it easy for anyone to relate to the stories that he tells in his songs and I absolutely love and recommend them to anyone.
