Trotting back to Martin

The Harlem Globetrotters are performing their 2019 Fan Powered World Tour show against the Washington Generals in the Elam Center on Jan. 25, at 7 p.m.

The Harlem Globetrotters have promised more interaction with fans in their 2019 show, which includes selling a pre-show Magic Pass for an additional $15 to shoot hoops, learn tricks and meet with the team before the main game begins.

The Harlem Globetrotters have played over 26,000 exhibition games since their beginning in 1927. The games feature dedicated athleticism, intricate trick shots and heavy crowd participation.

The 2019 Fan Powered World Tour features “the Flying Globies” who perform acrobatic, slam-dunk trick shots. It also includes the nine record-shattering tricks that the team managed to break on Guinness Book of World Records Day in November, including the longest basketball hook shot at 72 feet, 6.25 inches. This record was previously 70 feet.

The Trotters played one of their most infamous games in Martin in 1971 when they lost for only the second time in history to their infamous rivals, the Washington Generals, who played under the alias The New Jersey Reds. The score was 99-98 in favor of the Trotters when Generals player, Red Klotz, shot the game’s winning basket with less than 10 seconds left on the clock. The scorekeeper stopped the timer at two seconds to give the Trotters one last chance at a win.

However, to everyone’s shock, Trotters’ player Meadowlark Lemon missed his shot which resulted in the Reds’ second victory. The Harlem Globetrotters reported that they didn’t realize that they were behind on scoreboard, and by the time they did, there was no time to catch up.

To date, the Harlem Globetrotters have only lost six games.

Tickets are available up until the event both online at www.harlemglobetrotters.com and from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on weekdays in the University Center. Stadium seats are $25 and chair-back seats are $35. Military discounted tickets are $19 and $29. Student tickets for the event will be $15.

Government employees who are currently on furlough due to the government shutdown can present their government employment ID at the box office to receive two free tickets. Exclusions do apply but more information can be found at the UTM Office of Campus Recreation at 731-881-7745.

The team has also released an app for the tour that allows users to interact with the team electronically through games and custom photo filters.

This is the first time that the team will be returning to Martin since 1971 so all heads are turned to them to see if the Weakley County Curse will continue.

  1. Former UTM Athletic Director Phil Dane sold popcorn for the game in 1971. Might make for a good follow up feature.
