To all the boys I loved before, thanks for diversity

een making a big splash this summer and rom-coms have been following right behind them in popularity.

With smash hits like Kissing Booth and Set It Up, it seems that Netflix has hit the market strong for at-home streaming movies.

The latest name added to this trend was the book-to-movie adaptation of Jenny Han’s 2014 three-book-series To All the Boys I Loved Before.

To All the Boys I Loved Before is about an average teenage girl who happens to write letters to all of the boys she has ever had a crush on, the twist is that she never gives them the letters. Until one day, her safe-keeping hiding box is leaked and the drama ensues from there.

The series was a major hit in the young-adult fanbase and Netflix’s adaptation did not disappoint readers.

The Netflix movie only covered the first book in the series, but this leaves fans looking forward to more movies to come from the streaming staple.

The onscreen chemistry between characters Peter and Lara Jean captured the hearts and minds of those that watched, bringing the phrase ‘relationship goals’ to a whole new level for some.

This movie, though emotionally driven, has also been a milestone for some more culturally diverse viewers. Lead character Lara Jean Song Covey was written by Han as a mixed-race character, and producers of the film did keep this aspect of the film true to the novel. Diversity in casting has been a hot button issue for several years now and many viewers were relieved to be able to connect to the story in a more authentic way.

Lana Candor, the actress who portrays Lara Jean Song Covey, has said that she was honored to be able to represent her community in such a major way and show young girls that they too, can be represented.

Candor has previously played in other films including X-Men: Apocalypse and Patriots Day.

Netflix has created new trends in different facets of business, including casting, pricing, consumer behavior and more. With the popularity of this new release, the expanse of options for future films and an ever growing client-base, Netflix is sure to continue to produce ways to tug at the heart strings of many.
