Thunderbolt Broadcasting, Martin’s local radio station, hosted their annual Soybean Singing Bee Friday, Sept. 5. This year had a great turn out and had many people willing to chance their luck at singing the correct lines to the songs played.
The Singing Bee’s host, Kevin Bartholomew, actually participated last year in the Singing Bee and advanced pretty far in the competition. This year was different, Bartholomew was hosting instead of competing. Working on the radio side of things, picking songs everyone can participate in is time consuming. The host didn’t want to make it to easy, yet he still needed it to be challenging for the participants.
The Singing Bee consisted of three rounds and each round was led by the reading of a clue to the song, which was about to be played. The first one up got to choose whether or not, after hearing the clue, they wanted to play, which involved them listening to the song until the part came up for them to finish the lyric, or to pass the chance to their opponent.
The participant with two points at the end of the round, advanced to the next round. In the case of a tie, each participant was allowed a chance to finish the lyric of another song on the list.
The audience was not allowed to help the participants when it came time for them to finish the lyric, but they did participate in singing some of the songs they knew.
“I enjoyed hearing the songs I knew and watching the contestants try to think of the next few words or verse,” said Penny Webber, another audience member.
Each participant who lost their round was given a goodie bag, compliments of Thunderbolt Broadcasting. The first round winners were Tamra, Billy, Landy and Marisa. For the round itself, each of these contestants competed against another individual.
“This is my first year to come to the Singing Bee and I enjoyed watching the contestants,” said Regina Stafford, an audience member.
The first place winner, Tamra, won $100 and second place winner, Landy, received $50.
