Imagine you’re an African American boy adopted by a white mother, father, sister and brother. This is the life of Randall Pearson. His life, along with his family’s, is filled with emotion, drama and a riveting plot line.
This Is Us is a television series that is debatably one of the best shows I’ve seen. This series has six seasons with about 15 to 20 episodes in each season. The episodes are 42 minutes long and filled with different storylines for each of the characters portrayed.
The show is about a man named Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and a woman named Rebecca (Mandy Moore) that fall in love despite the difference in tax brackets. Rebecca was raised with money, and Jack was not. He provides a life with little means but a lot of love. They eventually get pregnant with triplets. During birth, one of the triplets dies, and the couple ends up adopting a boy that was abandoned at the fire station on the same day that their twins were born. They left the hospital with the three babies that they were planning on.
Throughout the television series, we watch the children, Kate (Chrissy Metz), Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Randall (Sterling K. Brown), grow up and create families of their own. Kate’s storyline revolves around her struggles with her weight, her husband, and her son, who is born blind. Kevin is a renowned actor. Randall’s story centers around his family of five and his job as a councilman. Randall also struggles with the desire to find his biological parents and explore his racial identity further. When the kids were in high school, their father died due to smoke inhalation when their house set on fire. This traumatic experience plays a huge part in the show as well. As they navigate through life, we watch many things change and grow.
This series is one of the best shows in my opinion because with the range in characters, most can relate and empathize with some of the life events. This show gets viewers emotionally attached and feeling with the family as they do. This show is also very long, giving a lot of content to consume. Throughout this long show, the plot line does not get boring or drag on in any season. The series also touches on challenging topics, such as race, disabilities and addiction. You can tell the creator, Dan Fogelman, was extremely intentional in the plot of this story. If you are looking for a new series to binge-watch, this would be the perfect show for you.
