The Pacer welcomes readers back to UTM

The spring semester is finally under way and seniors are preparing for their final semester at UTM.

Of course, if you’ve been anywhere in Tennessee this past week, the spring season couldn’t come sooner, classes or no classes. This state hasn’t had weather this bad in quite a while, which may understandably discourage student attendance for the first day or so.

Potentially dangerous situations aside, we still recommend that UTM students attend class despite this unusual weather. After all, if safe but uncomfortable weather is enough to keep you out of class, you’re not really setting your expectations for the class very high.

Let’s face it, though, this weather is ridiculous. With temperatures in the single and low double digits, no outside setting in Tennessee sounds even remotely inviting right now. It kind of makes you wonder why some people see this time of year as a winter wonderland as opposed to a frozen wasteland.

But even staying bundled up inside won’t keep us safe, because the stubborn seasonal viruses can end up getting an entire household sick in a matter of days. Check out the news reports on the rising number of flu cases, and you won’t want to be near anyone else, inside or outside.

Still, readers who prefer this time of year over warmer seasons should enjoy it while they can. Tennessee weather doesn’t stay cold for long, and, after a week like this one, that’s hardly something to take for granted.

Love it or hate it, the winter season will be gone long before the spring semester of 2014 ends at UTM. And for some of you, this semester is your last. Does the thought of graduating make you excited or nervous? What are your plans after you say goodbye to UTM?

These are the questions you can expect to hear by now. And we hope that you spend your time finding out what the future holds for you after graduation, especially if you haven’t already. After all, graduation is the next big step that will surely change life as we know it.

The Pacer would like to welcome readers back to the UTM campus, and we hope you stay well and will keep us a part of your college experience this semester. We wish you the best of luck and an excellent academic year.
