The NFL Fieldhouse: First Annual Super Bowl Commercial Awards

Most Heartwarming Commercial

And The Award Goes To: Budweiser’s “Puppy Love” Ad

This one just about put me to tears.  Even watching it back now, days after the fact, I still get misty-eyed just watching it.  It’s just so cute and heartwarming and just full of warm and fuzzy feelings that it would have been a travesty if I hadn’t put this one at the top.  Maybe it’s just the fact that I have an especially soft spot for dogs–puppies especially–but I couldn’t justify placing this one anywhere but first on the Heartwarming list.  Then again, Budweiser knocks it out of the park every year, so this really shouldn’t be much of a surprise.

Honorable Mention: Budweiser’s “A Hero’s Welcome” Spot (see?)

Most Inspiring Commercial

And The Award Goes To: Microsoft’s “Empowering” Commercial

It’s powerful, it’s hopeful, it’s inspiring…what more can you want from a Super Bowl commercial?  This one made my eyes water too, but they were more tears of joy, tears of realization that we can really come up with some awesome stuff when we put our minds to it. After losing my faith in humanity thanks to the backlash from the Coke ad previously mentioned…this spot just builds it back up again.  Kudos to Microsoft, who are one of the most incredible advertisers on the planet.  (Side note: I just typed that sentence on a Mac.  Does that count as blasphemy?)

Honorable Mention: Duracell’s “Trust Your Power” Spot

Funniest Commercial

And The Award Goes To: Toyota’s Muppets Ad That Has No Easily Researchable Name

This was probably the funniest ad I’ve seen in ages.  Terry Crews happens upon a broken-down bus that turns out to be filled with Muppets, and hilarity ensues. Kermit himself makes a nice cameo at the very end, which is a nice touch.  What really sells it for me, however, is how Crews slowly but surely begins to warm up to the idea until, at the very end, he’s standing out of the top of his Toyota with his shirt unbuttoned and his tie around his head, singing along with the music.  Instant classic.

Honorable Mention: Doritos’ “Time Machine” Ad
