The library: things you didn’t know

The Paul Meek Library offers a variety of services to help students succeed in their studies.

Most students are aware of the study rooms and the use of computers in the library, but they may not be aware of other ways to utilize the library.

One way the library helps is through the Library Subject Liaisons program which assigns a librarian to each department on campus. The purpose of the Subject Liaison is to help professors and students with their needs in their specific departments and majors.

The Subject Liaison can collect materials, attend department meetings, conduct instruction sessions for library usage, assist in courses via Canvas and much more.

Heidi Bush, Melissa Engleman, Caren Nichter, Erin Peters, Sam Richardson, Erin Weber and Karen White are all the librarians involved in the Subject Liaisons program.

Each librarian is assigned to multiple departments. For a list of each librarians’ responsibilities, visit https://libguides.utm.edu/liaisons.

Another way the library assists in student success is helping with research.

The UTM website has a specific page dedicated to the library. A tab on the page titled “Research” sends the user to a list of different research areas such as Behavioral Sciences, Fine Arts, Education etc. These links give the user book suggestions for the subject area they are researching. The user is able to tailor their search to their specific needs.

The page also allows the user to search subjects through specific librarians, which in return, brings up more materials for the user to use.

If sifting through research materials seems daunting, the library lets students ask questions and make meetings with librarians.

The library’s page has a section above the search bar titled “Ask a Librarian.” Here the user can click on the chat bubble and ask a question and a librarian will reply. If they choose to email a librarian, they can do that from this tab as well. If students are more comfortable texting, they can also text the library.

There is also a section labeled “For Students.” When the user clicks on the section it takes them to a page that has a button where they can schedule an appointment.

Students can schedule a 25 minute meeting or a 55 minute meeting.

The “For Students” tab also allows the user to search for citation information for journal articles.

The library also houses the Media Center. The center provides study space, presentation equipment, portable DVD players, a 3D printer, two multimedia classrooms, two multimedia work stations and many more amenities listed on the library’s page.

The Paul Meek Library is open from 7:30 a.m. – midnight. For more information about the services the library offers visit https://www.utm.edu/library.php.
