This story is somewhat disturbing but amusing: Viewer discretion is advised. Once upon a cold Thanksgiving day, my mom was a busy little bee, as she is primarily the one behind the Thanksgiving dishes for our household. Up at the crack of dawn, she is moving around the kitchen prepping to cook her famous lasagna and turkey and dressing along with other side dishes. Amongst the sides were the popular Glory Seasoned Southern Style Mixed Greens; yams; slices of ham; a big, cooked turkey; and deviled eggs, from what I remember. Now, from reading the title of this story, the canned greens play an important part of this story.
As the day passed and evening fell, it was time to feast on the delicious meal Mom had prepared for the family. Seated around the table was Mom, Dad, my siblings and I, as we filled our plates and hopefully our stomachs. We began eating and everything was so tasty. Mom was a decent cook and always threw down in the kitchen whenever she could. However, later that night, I felt gassy. I didn’t think too much of it and just thought it was a normal bowel movement, but my older brother felt the same way.
We began discussing why we felt this way and couldn’t think of a proper reason until my dad had told us it may have been one of the dishes Mom had made. I didn’t want to believe it was Mom’s cooking, but my stomach also wasn’t fighting for its life until I ate her meal. My little sister started having the same symptoms we did, and that’s when we knew it was something Mom had cooked. So, we analyzed everything she prepared and looked at expiration dates on the canned goods.
Turns out the canned Glory greens were the culprit to why our stomachs were in shambles, and till this day, Mom never cooked them again for Thanksgiving.
