A sledgehammer, safety glasses and a fighting attitude is what the city of Martin was in for at the 5th Annual Cancer Crash Car Bash.
The fundraiser for Cancer included donations, T-shirts and letting off some steam for the cause by using a sledgehammer to “smash and bash” a car while wearing safety glasses.
“This event is about getting back and getting even,” said Lynn Harper, the creator of the Car Bash. Harper also explained his personal investment in this event which is dedicated to his father, who lost his battle to cancer.
Before the car received a bashing at the festival, it was placed at JJ’s Market. While there they added a new twist by allowing people to donate money for the cause and sign the car. Another new twist to the event was that the car was green instead of being “pretty in pink.”
“People expected the car to be pink, and we wanted to change it up and be different,” said Michelle Borgens, a worker at the bash who also had a personal investment in the event.
The Car Bash had a crowd of all age groups.
“The youngest child to swing at the damaged car was a 2-years-old,” said Susie Walker, a Car Bash worker.
Walker said that the event was quite successful earning over $100 in 35 minutes. The prices of the event were $1 for five swings and $10 for five minutes worth of swings, which included a T-shirt.
This heart-felt event was also sponsored by local businesses in Martin, such as: JJ’s Quick Shop, Harper’s Wrecker’s Service, A+ Auto Repair, UTM Relay for Life, Jower’s Sign Company and Monograms and More.
After the event ended, the car’s use doesn’t end.
“The car goes to the Martin Police Department where they use it as target practice, and then it goes to the junk yard,” said.
The Cancer Crash Car Bash is an event that allows Martin citizens to come out and fight cancer, not just by raising money, but by bending and smashing metal with a fight in their hearts.
“This event will be around as long as we can do it,” said Borgens.
