The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and the Tennessee Fur Harvesters are partnering together to host a free trapper training camp Feb. 23-25 at the TWRA Buffalo Ridge Refuge in Humphreys County.
The second annual training camp will give positive exposure to trapping and show people of all ages the benefits of trapping animals themselves for food and furs.
Reservations and registration ends Thursday night, Feb. 22, as a dinner will be served Friday before class. The classes will begin Friday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. and continue Saturday, Feb. 24, at 8 a.m. The TWRA and TFH are expecting just under 200 participants this year which is a growth from their inaugral training weekend last year.
Check-in will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday.
The classes will include instruction over different types of traps, what specific trap to use and why to use it, live trap lines, laws and regulations regarding trapping, fur handling, set making and snaring, trapping associations and their functions and much more. Participants can look forward to learning everything they will ever need to know about trapping and learning from the best in Tennessee.
“Trapping is much more humane than most people realize,” says junior business major Daniel Jones.
John Daniel, the National Trappers Association Director, encourages UTM Wildlife Management majors to take advantage of this opportunity as, “It is another tool to put in your work chest and is honestly a great opportunity.” Daniel explained that the entire weekend is something to look forward to as participants will learn every aspect about trapping “from A to Z.”
Three meals on Saturday will be provided to participants by the TWRA and TFH and breakfast on Sunday. Camping locations and hotels are located near the refuge and are available for reservation.
