The Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) released its Golfer of the Week accolades today as the UTM junior Tate Chumley claimed the honors on the men’s side.
This morning’s announcement marks the first time in Chumley’s career that he has nabbed the OVC’s top weekly award. The Murfreesboro, Tennessee native becomes just the 12th player in school history to win an OVC Golfer of the Week accolade.
Chumley tied for the best tournament finish of his collegiate career at the Gulf Coast Collegiate, held on March 1-2 at Diamondhead Country Club in Bay St. Louis, Missouri. He carded a 143 (-1) in the rain-shortened event, shooting an even-par 72 in Monday’s Round 1 before tallying a 71 (-1) in the second round later that day.
Chumley’s third-place performance was his fourth career top-five finish and equaled his career-best third-place effort at the SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational on Sept. 24-25, 2018.
In the field of 67 golfers, Chumley led the tournament in par-3 scoring (2.88, -1) and pars (29) while ranking second in the field in par-4 scoring (4.00, E). He registered four birdies and was responsible for only three bogeys in the event.
Chumley’s efforts helped propel the Skyhawks to the team championship, as UTM won its 2020-21 season opener with a total score of 589 (+13) over 36 holes.
The Skyhawks return to the links at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate, hosted by Tennessee Tech on March 15-16.
