Summer fashion keeps cool and kewl

Spring is ending and summer is quickly approaching.

We at The Pacer, or at least the ladies on the staff, want you to always be prepared for the heat that’s coming. So we’re going to show you how to be affordably fashionable while still keeping cool.

The list below follows the order from head to toe.

Embrace your inner Audrey Hepburn and invest in a floppy hat! Large brimmed wicker hats are sold at all price points and very trendy right now. The brim will keep your face and shoulders protected from the sun and if you pick one with a ribbon, you’ll add an extra touch of femininity to your beach look.

The next look is a little loud but sure to dress up any swimsuit or plain work outfit, take the risk and pick out a nice pair of statement earrings. The longer, more fringe, use of tassels, or bright colors- the better! Feathers and fringe are very in this season, so get your dose of trends in an easy way with your statement earrings.

These earrings can help pull together any standard outfit, dress up your swimwear, or be the coordinating color in any other pattern-heavy outfit.

You’ve protected your shoulders and dressed up your ears, now for another practical hit, your sunglasses. But don’t hold onto those big sunnies from years past, this year the new trend is skinny glasses. Small, rectangular frames that show off brows and expose your cheeks but protect the eyes all at the same time are going to be the hit at every beach. Not into the skinny look? If you’re going to keep wearing big glasses, choose a bold plastic frame in a square shape to keep being on trend.

Of course the next step is your top. While bralettes seem to be a timeless piece the last few years, the newest addition is a southern favorite: Seersucker! Pick up a seersucker top in a peasant cut or a one shoulder tank and you’ve taken the summer trend to the next level.

Obviously you’ll pair your choice top with any pair of shorts you own, but if you like to be adventurous flowing pants are in style as well as bike shorts, though this writer really isn’t sure why. Chanel loves the bike-short look though, so who knows, maybe they’ll be the next skater skirt.

If you’re more of a dress person stick to the big stripe prints, cherry prints and palm leaves. Florals are out. If you’re a one-and-done type person, as many dress people are, you should really checkout jumpsuits. Here in our tiny town, Factory Connection has a huge selection. Even select Walmart stores are working to get in the long-legged romper. Yes, boys, there is a difference between a romper and a jumpsuit.

Finally for my favorite part, SHOES. The ever-beloved wedge is still in, but now in a more platform style. Count this writer out because I’m short and my legs need all the help they can get, but tall friends just know that I’m envying your ability to pull off the season’s hottest dressy look.

Not a heel person? Check out the H-band-style slides that are taking over beaches everywhere. Throw them on in white for an ultra-summer look, or black and tan for the go-to look of an office. Be careful to try them on first, regardless of where you purchase them, because a slide sandal that’s too long in the back is just going to look cheap. If you’re a half size, you’ll typically size down. Check out Amazon, Factory Connection, or even Walmart for a dupe of the Sam Edelman shoes driving us all to save money and get consistent pedicures.

Not into the trends and looking to live out of your roommates’ closets? Lavender and lime green are back in. Hello, 2009? Did we miss you?

If those colors aren’t your favorite, search for anything with tie-dye, animal print, fringe, polka dots or fish nets. Think macramé fish net, not the tight kind.

Stick to these fashion trends and you’re sure to stay cool and kewl for the summer.
