The trivia nights here in, hosted by Martin Coffeehouse, seem to be a welcomed break for UTM students.
Since 2017, the coffee house has hosted eight trivia nights with topics ranging from Disney, binge-worthy television shows like The Office, Friends, and Grey’s Anatomy and popular films like Harry Potter.
Austin Avallone, a senior Business Management major from Springfield, attended their most recent trivia night, which was themed with questions about The Office.
“Some of the questions were difficult at times, even for the most avid followers of the hit series, The Office. Though hard questions added so much anticipation and excitement. It made it anyone’s game,” Avallone said.
Martin Coffeehouse seems to offer an ideal location for trivia. Avallone, along with Tyler Davidson, a junior Political Science major from Linden, both commented on the environment of the shop as being welcoming and comforting.
“The atmosphere was inviting with a healthy balance of competitiveness and fun,” Davidson said.
Another student, Lexi Rahm, a senior Nursing student from Rutherford, who also attended The Office trivia night as well as their Grey’s Anatomy trivia night, noted that both events were first and foremost “a fun way to flex our knowledge of one of our favorite shows.”
The questions asked and the difficulty of them being focused on the small details added to the experience.
“Although I haven’t won yet, I’m definitely willing to try again soon,” Rahm said.
The trivia nights seem to attract a lot of attention, with over 100 people marking “interested” on their Facebook events. Martin Coffeehouse also holds polls on what topics they should focus on in future trivia nights.
These trivia nights, usually sponsored by on-campus organizations including Letters in Motion and the UTM History Club, are ticketed team events that usually range from $10-$20 per team. Teams can have up to four members and the winners of the event receive gift cards or cash prizes.
