Student Organization Spotlight: Baptist Collegiate Ministry

The Baptist Collegiate Ministry (BCM) is a campus ministry organization that reaches out to students at UT Martin to provide a faith-based community during their time in college. They have multiple events every week, including a co-ed worship service (the Well) at 6 p.m. on Mondays, a women’s Bible study (Radiant) at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, free lunches (Noonday) at noon on Thursdays, men’s Bible study (Man Up) at 6 p.m. on Thursdays, and monthly fellowship events. The goal of the BCM is to reach students and give them a home away from home that supports them in their walk with Christ during their college years.

COVID-19 took a toll on a lot of different student organizations, the BCM included. They had to cancel all events and try to move them online. The Well got moved on YouTube, and the speakers for Radiant and Man Up had to send a video to give the message instead of speaking directly to the students. This created a setback in the attendance for the events, but there has been an increase in numbers for every fellowship event, according to Taylor Spurlock.

Taylor Spurlock is a graduate student from Metropolis, Illinois, but currently lives in Martin with her husband, Chris, while she is in school obtaining her Literary Education degree. Spurlock has been a part of this organization since her freshman year in 2018 and is currently on staff at the BCM as the Women’s Campus Missionary. “In this role, I am responsible for reaching out to girls both inside and outside the BCM to provide a faith-based mentorship. I lead a weekly women’s Bible study called Radiant that allows girls in college to connect to their sisters in Christ and spend time reading the Word and ‘fellowshipping’ with one another,” she said. Spurlock’s favorite event is Radiant, the women’s Bible study. Discipleship is very important to her, and Radiant allows her to disciple other girls and be able to walk through life with them.

Others on staff are Luke Love, the Men’s Campus Missionary; Rachel Brauer, secretary; and Morgan Owen, the Campus Minister. Morgan Owen has worked as the BCM Campus Minister for 20 years and loves to see students grow closer to Christ while away from home and in college.
