The 67th General Assembly of the Student Government Association held it’s first annual State of the SGA address on Sept. 13.
Secretary Esmeralda Mejorado began the address by reminding students that with hard work, your goals can be achieved. She spoke about how from hard work, she was elected as the secretary.
With the new changes in SGA, Mejorado assured students that rather than members sitting in the office fulfilling hours, they will now be sent out as representatives at various university events. This is in hopes to have more beneficial interactions with students by coming to them, rather them having to come the office to talk.
Next, Vice President Brandon Anderson talked about the Student Appreciation Week that began on Sept. 10. SGA members designated a day of the week to different ways to show their appreciation of the UTM student body such as offering free donuts and coffee. Anderson also talked about the introduction of Homecoming King to this years Homecoming events.
President Devin Majors talked about his excitement for the “change the student body needed” that he plans to bring. His main areas of change include transparency with students, whether that be decisions made, money spent, or information from meetings, a constitutional revision and expanding on student outreach. Majors said he wishes to have “ears to the sidewalks” and be able to form a better relationship between SGA and the students.
Majors was very excited to announce that SGA has changed their meeting times from 9 p.m. to 7 p.m. every other Tuesday in UC 111. This adjustment is to allow more students to be able to attend the meetings to be more informed of what is happening on their campus. As Majors said, “everyone is a member of the SGA” so everyone should be comfortable and able to make it to the meetings.
The UTM SGA recognizes its potential to benefit the university and hopes to make as much progress as possible this year.
