Spring has sprung for the choral groups on campus.
The annual spring concert at UTM will take place Sunday, March 31 at 3 p.m. in the Blankenship Recital Hall in the Fine Arts building, and is free to the public.
The concert will feature eight-10 songs, including a Mama Mia medley.
Acts scheduled include the University Singers, the New Pacer Singers and two soloists. The University Singers is the largest ensemble on campus, with around 100 members and is open to anyone that wants to join. The New Pacer Singers is open by audition only and they tour annually throughout the states.
The vocalists have worked on their pieces all semester, practicing three times a week.
The soloists for the concert, Lydia Greub and Meleah Gately, are the winners of the fifth annual Death by Voice competition at UTM. Greub was the winner of the high school competition, and Gately won the college competition.
Choir Director Mark Simmons said students should attend the concert āto hear the Mama Mia medley at the end. Itās fun music, and itās well-sung by the choir. They love singing it.ā
āComing to hear live music is always satisfying,ā Simmons said. āItās different than listening to music from a recording, but itās different in all the best ways.ā
The spring concert serves as a preview of the main choral concert on April 13 with the Jackson Symphony. It will be an abbreviated version of the main concert, featuring a selection of the program.
The concert can also serve to fulfill the concert attendance requirement for the Music Appreciation classes. Attendees seeking credit for this concert should bring their student identification.
