Fans of the Skyhawk football team have been treated to a Spring practice schedule that was released by Sports Information on Mar. 10.
While the dates are tentative and are subject to change, the Skyhawks plan to have seven practices in March and seven in April, all leading up the annual Navy and White Spring Game on April 18.
UTM’s annual pro day, where the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) allows NFL scouts to come analyze the athletes, will be held on Mar. 23. The most recent Skyhawk to get picked up in the NFL Draft was defensive tackle Montori Hughes, who played for UTM from 2011-2012 and was taken by the Indianapolis Colts in 2013.
The Skyhawks enter Spring training after a successful turnaround season that saw the team improve from 2-9 in 2018 to 7-5 in 2019, coming just short of an OVC title but sharing the Sergeant York Trophy with Tennessee State and Austin Peay.
The Skyhawks will be without some key players going into next year, with players such as All-American wide receiver and punt returner (WR) Terry Williams, WR Jaylon Moore and defensive back (DB) DaVonte Maura, among others, played out their senior seasons in 2019, including veteran quarterback Joe Hudson. Running back (RB) Jaimiee Bowe, punter Zane Cox and DB Cam Ordway also played last season as graduate students.
While potentially losing some recognizable faces, the Skyhawks reeled in an impressive signing class in the 2019-20 offseason, ranking 14th nationally among Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) schools by Hero Sports.
The Skyhawks will kick off Spring training on Mar. 18. All practices and the Spring Game are open to the public. The entire schedule, including the 2020 season schedule, can be found on Sports Information.
