The University of Tennessee at Martin Student-Athlete Advisory Committee
will sponsor an appearance by Kate Fagan, New York Times best-selling sports journalist,
beginning at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 4, in the Skyhawk Fieldhouse. The event is free and open to the
public.
Fagan served as a columnist and feature writer for ESPN.com and ESPN The Magazine,
as well as an on-air talent for ESPN for seven years. She frequently appeared on “Outside the
Lines” and “E:60” and was a core member of The Friday Four. She also made more than 150
appearances on “Around the Horn,” and she served as the show’s first female host in 2017.
Born in Schenectady, New York, Fagan is also the author of “What Made Maddy Run,”
which spent one month as the No. 1 New York Times best-seller on the sports list. The 2017
book addresses the important issues of anxiety, depression and suicide in a perfectionist, social
media-driven society. She is also the author of the memoir “The Reappearing Act” about her
experience coming out as a women’s basketball student-athlete at the University of Colorado.
In addition to her work with ESPN, Fagan is a sought-after speaker on athlete mental
health and the variables facing female athletes. She served as commencement speaker at her
alma mater in May 2017 while also routinely hosting events and moderating panels both for
brands and non-profits.
Fagan is a co-host of the “Free Cookies” podcast, which blends wellness, food and
humor. She was named a 2018 Webby finalist for “Best Sports Podcast.”
