UTM sorority recruitment is a very exciting, but nervous time for many women. This year recruitment is Sept. 6-10.
“I think it is a good sign and the sororities are excited that the numbers for this year’s recruitment are the highest [they’ve been] in the last 10 years,” said Louis Ragsdale, UTM Greek Life Coordinator.
The Panhellenic sororities at UTM are Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Omicron Pi, Chi Omega and Zeta Tau Alpha. Each sorority has a philanthropy that they raise money and awareness for throughout the year. The philanthropies are Alpha Delta Pi: Ronald McDonald House; Alpha Omicron Pi: Juvenile Arthritis Foundation; Chi Omega: Make A Wish and Zeta Tau Alpha: Breast Cancer Education and Awareness.
As far as attire for the events go, each night of rush tends to get dressier. On Friday night, a cute sundress or any equivalent outfit would be perfect; on Saturday night, a nice Sunday dress is acceptable. On Sunday night, girls wear a semi-formal dress. For Bid Day, girls receive T-shirts and don’t have to wear fancy attire.
During sorority recruitment, expect to hear lots of songs, talk to many different women and learn great information on each sorority on the campus of UTM. Each night offers a different view of each sorority and does so in an entertaining way.
The informative night is Thursday, Sept. 6 at 8 p.m. in Watkins Auditorium. The president of each sorority will give a speech and then the Panhellenic officers will speak and let everyone know what to expect throughout the weekend.
Friday, Sept. 7 begins formal recruitment. On this night, all the women going through recruitment will get to visit each sorority’s room and learn about their philanthropy.
The most important night of rush is preference night on Sunday, Sept. 9. On this night, each woman will have the opportunity to ‘pref’ their favorite sorority. After each girl fills out their preference card, they wait for the results.
Bid Day officially begins at 5 p.m on Monday Sept. 10. On Bid Day, the women will either accept or deny their bids. If accepted, the women will literally run outside the University Center to be greeted by their new sisters.
Recruitment weekend can be long and stressful, so be sure to keep your calm and carry things to keep you comfortable, like chap stick, comfortable shoes, a snack and mints.
