Some advice on advising: do your research, be prepared

With the semester winding to an end and finals just around the corner, students are growing eager to head home for the holidays.

Before heading home for Thanksgiving, make sure you have contacted your advisor to schedule an appointment.

The majority of us are all too familiar with the process by now, but if you’re a freshman, you might be feeling lost. We here at The Pacer have put together some advice for advising and registration.

If you don’t meet with your advisor, you won’t be able to register for classes next semester due to the advising hold put on each student’s account automatically.

A good idea for everyone registering is to look at your Flight Plan prior to meeting with your advisor so you have an idea of what classes to take in case of a conflict.

Keep in mind that some classes are only offered in either the spring or the fall, and those classes could be necessary for graduation.

When your time comes to register, be prepared. Have all of your Course Registration Numbers (CRN’s) written out so you can register faster to ensure you get into the proper classes. Have the website already open prior to your scheduled time.

It’s also helpful to pick extra CRN’s ahead of time, because as most of us know by now, you can’t always get what you want.

Pay attention to the number of classes you have registered for and how it corresponds to the number of hours you are taking. The complication here comes mostly from science labs, as labs are generally only worth one credit hour and lecture is worth three. You will have to register for two other three credit-hour courses to meet or exceed 12 hours if you plan on taking a science course with a lab.

It’s also a good idea to make sure the courses you have picked out haven’t filled up before your registration time.

Early registration for upperclassmen begins on Nov. 11.
