Softball returns home after rough weekend in Missouri

While the SEMO Redhawks ultimately won the series 2-1 against the UT Martin Skyhawks, the Skyhawks did finish on a positive note winning the last game by one run to avoid the sweep.

The Lady Skyhawks traveled to Cape Girardeau, Missouri this past weekend to take on the Lady Redhawks in a three-game series on March 8 and 9.

In game one on March 8 at 1 p.m., the Redhawks took home the victory 1-0. Overall the game was a defensive showcase as the Skyhawks only allowed one run off of 13 hits and that run did not come until the 10th inning. The issue came that Skyhawks batters could not get much going, having only four hits through 35 ABs (at bats).

In game two, the Skyhawks did manage to score once thanks to sophomore centerfielder Kyla Harley, but the defense struggled allowing six runs off just eight hits.

In game two on March 8 at 3:30 p.m., once again the Redhawks took home the win, at a score of 6-1. The Skyhawks offense did manage the score this time thanks to sophomore centerfielder Kyla Harley. Outside of that the Skyhawks struggled, hitting seven times out of 27 ABs and striking out 11 times.

Looking at the hits and ABs, eight to 25, one would have thought the Skyhawks defense played. The issue came when off of eight of those hits, the Redhawks managed to score six times with both senior second baseman Sydney Dennis and sophomore third baseman Brooklyn Saysoff scoring twice.

In the final game of the series, the offense came to life, scoring six total runs with four coming in the second inning thanks to seven walks which led to the Skyhawks winning the game 6-5.

The offense played similar to how the second game of the Redhawks went, hitting six balls on 25 ABs, but unlike the Redhawks, the Skyhawks scored off every hit. Again, the sophomore star, Harley managed to score, scoring twice in the final game. The biggest note from this game is how the Skyhawks came alive in the second inning, scoring four runs.

The Skyhawks’ next opponent is the Lindenwood Lions. The Lions are coming off a similar weekend to the Skyhawks where they went 1-2 in a three game series against the Eastern Illinois Panthers where in total they were outscored 3-18.

Now at 9-11, the Skyhawks will be looking to get back above .500 this weekend at home in a three-game series against the Lions on March 15 and 16.
