With just 10 regular-season games left, where will the Lady Skyhawks’ softball team finish?
April has been nothing but short of chaotic for the Skyhawks. To start the month off, they were set to play in a three-game series at home against the Morehead State Eagles. Unfortunately, due to flooding, game one on April 6 was canceled completely.
The team did not let that slow them down, though, as they cruised to an 11-2 win in game one of the series on April 7. Seven different players managed to score a run with junior infielder Kyrsten Brown and junior outfielder Morea Hodge scoring two runs each, while sophomore outfielder Carly Ward went above and beyond, scoring three runs herself.
While the box score may show who scored each run, some thanks have to be given to graduate infielder Alli Robinson, who batted three runs in. While the offense led the way for the majority of the game, credit needs to be given to the defense as well for not only holding the Eagles to two runs but also wrapping up the game early on a run rule in the bottom of the fifth inning.
In game two of the series on April 7, things again went in favor of the Skyhawks as they managed to pull out a 9-5 win. The Skyhawks managed to win this game by starting out and ending strong. The team managed to score three runs in both the first and sixth innings. Hodge showed out again, scoring another two runs off three walks. The star of this game was junior infielder Kennedy Brown, who not only managed to score two runs herself but also scored in three runs.
The team has since fallen down a slippery slope, losing four games straight. In the first game of their losing streak, the team traveled to the 19 ranked Ole Miss Rebels on April 8. The Rebels had no issues getting past the Skyhawks as they called the game early in the fifth inning at 12-0.
Trying to get things back on a winning path, the Skyhawks then returned home for a three-game series against the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles on April 12 and 13. As mentioned previously, the Skyhawks could not get in the win column, dropping three games. In game one of the series, the Golden Eagles managed to double the score of the Skyhawks at 8-4. In game two, the Skyhawks’ defense managed to hold the Golden Eagles to just two runs, but the offense could not get anything going, as zero runs were scored.
In game three, the Skyhawks took it all the way to the 11th inning after overcoming a 4-0 deficit.
The Skyhawks and Golden Eagles then went back and forth until that 11th inning, when the Golden Eagles scored five runs and their defense managed three quick outs.
Now at 14-23 overall and 6-11 in the conference, the Skyhawks have 10 games to get back into the win column. Of those 10 games, just one is non-conference.
On April 17-18, they will travel to Evansville to take on the 10-21 and 7-9 Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles in a three-game series. They will then travel to their only non-conference opponent, the 25-15 Southern Illinois Salukis, on April 23.
Back at home on April 26 and 27, they will face the 20-13 and 10-7 Tennessee State Tigers in a three-game series. For the regular season finale, the Skyhawks will travel to Edwardsville, Illinois, to take on the 23-16 and 13-4 SIUE Cougars on May 3 and 4.
The Skyhawks will then finish the 2025 Softball Campaign by competing in the OVC Championship Tournament from May 7 to May 10 in Peoria, Illinois.
