After starting the season 2-1, with both wins coming against ranked FCS opponents, UTM will start a six-game conference lineup when they travel to Southeast Missouri on Saturday, Sept. 28.
Many would think that wins over a Chattanooga team that was ranked #25 and a Central Arkansas team that was ranked #7 would be enough to put the Skyhawks into the FCS Coaches Top-25. Those people would be wrong.
Following the team’s win over Central Arkansas head coach Jason Simpson said that it would be a joke if his team wasn’t ranked in the top 20. Well … they aren’t, and Simpson isn’t exactly laughing about it, but despite being snubbed by the FCS Coaches Poll the team is currently ranked 24th in the Sports Network media.
With Dylan Favre solidifying the once questionable quarterback position, UTM could make some serious noise in the OVC over the next few weeks and it all starts this weekend.
SEMO comes into the contest with record of 0-3 and have been outscored 39-112 so far this season.
“Well, just like any other team that is playing we have to stick to our alignments, assignments and technique,” said SEMO offensive assistant and former record-setting Union City High School tailback, Josh Nicks. “[We have to be] mentally focused going into this game because, in this conference, the games are always close … Whomever works the hardest during the week getting ready for the other team … will have the upper hand. ”
After returning from their trip to Missouri, the Skyhawks will welcome Jacksonville State for their homecoming game. Then they will travel to Tennessee Tech on a short week for a Thursday night game before returning home to face Tennessee State.
While they Skyhawks made it through the first three games of the season with a 2-1 record they will have their hands full once they kickoff OVC play this weekend.
