Graduating from high school and starting college is an exciting time; for some, it can be overwhelming.

UT Martin strives to ensure students have several venues for students, faculty, and staff who are overwhelmed, stressed or have barriers that affect their life’s social, academic, physical and mental aspects. Care Team is one organization that is available to help.

The UT Martin Care Team promotes the well-being of all Skyhawks and provides supportive care connections to campus and community resources. It is a multifaceted organization.

UT Martin Care Team is a six-person crisis response team available 24/7. When a student is transported to the hospital, one of the crisis team members will stay with the student until the student’s parents arrive. Care Team is also part of the university’s Behavioral Threat Assessment Team. Case Managers coordinate outreach, intervention and support efforts to assist students across campus and community systems.

The Care Team helps those who are dealing with some grief. Grief is a response to a significant change of events. Grief could be caused by things besides the death of a person. Grief can happen when a friendship or marriage ends, the end of a job, high school, etc. Grief has different stages. Stages of grief include shock, denial, anger, guilt, bargaining, depression and acceptance. There is no timetable for grief. Each person deals with grief at a different rate and in a separate order. Grief can be overwhelming.

In the spring of 2023, the Care Team started Care Connection. Care Connection is for students, faculty, and staff who need assistance to prevent a small problem from snowballing into a bigger problem. Anyone can submit a Care Connection. A response will occur within one to two days of submission.

There is no shame in seeking help if you are feeling overwhelmed. Talking to someone can help. Anyone (students, staff, faculty, parents, and community members) can submit a Care Connection or a Hawk Alert regarding a person’s health, safety, and overall well-being.
