The Skyhawk baseball team traveled to Evansville, Indiana, to take on the University of Evansville on April 3.
Despite winning two games of their three-game series against OVC opponent Morehead State last weekend, the Skyhawks fell 3-6 to Evansville.
Sophomore infielder Casey Harford led the team in hits with three and contributed to the score sheet with one RBI.
Fellow sophomore infielder Ethan Whitley led the team in RBI’s with two, but also scored a run of his own and helped the Skyhawks’ offense with two hits.
UTM struck first with a Harford double in the infield that allowed junior outfielder Sean Dixson to run home and give UTM a 1-0 lead.
However, the fourth inning proved to be the killing blow for the Skyhawks, as Evansville tallied five runs.
Evansville designated hitter A.J. Fritz produced the most for the squad from Indiana. Fritz gave Evansville their lead by hitting a left-side single and giving infielder Danny Borgstrom a chance to run home.
A single by infielder Craig Shepherd allowed Fritz to run home and bolster Evansville’s lead to 3-1. In the fifth inning, when Evansville already had an established 5-1 lead, Fritz cranked a home run to cap off his team’s offensive production.
Whitley responded with a home run of his own in the eighth inning, accounting for two RBI’s. However, this effort wasn’t enough to catch up to Evansville.
The comeback effort ultimately fell short, as senior outfielder Jordan Stoner and sophomore catcher Blake Daniels, who was recently named to the Buster Posey Award watch list, were left stranded on base in the final inning, sending the Skyhawks away with a loss.
Freshman pitcher Seth Petry (1-1) was credited with the loss, striking out two batters but allowing two runs in 3.1 innings pitched.
The Skyhawks (4-8 OVC) sit just above last-place Tennessee Tech (2-10 OVC) in the standings.
