The Skyhawk soccer squad has had it rough over their last three matchups, with the Morehead State Eagles (1-4) delivering UTM’s third-straight loss after the Skyhawks started off the season 2-0.
Similar to last week’s 2-0 defeat against Southern Illinois – Edwardsville (SIUE), the Skyhawks’ offense was blanked once again. Despite being outshot 12-6 by the Skyhawks, the Eagles delivered the dagger on a late goal in the 77th minute to secure a slim victory.
Offensively, junior midfielder/forward Hendrikje Baurmann and senior forward Jaden Hildreth both led the team in shots with three apiece. Junior forward Jill Hildreth and freshman midfielder/forward Emely van der Vliet both registered multiple attempts but to no avail.
Aided by a stout defense that allowed only two shots in the second half, senior goalkeeper Erica Meyers only surrendered one goal. Despite the recent struggles of the team, Meyers still boasts a 0.98% goals-against average on the season.
The Skyhawks got the ball rolling with a shot by Baurmann in the 12th minute. UTM’s second shot came on a corner kick in the 23rd minute, as Jaden Hildreth was stonewalled by Morehead State goalkeeper Michelle Jerantowski. Jill Hildreth (41st) and senior forward Baylee Arnott (43rd) both got shots off towards the end of the first half, but were also stopped by Jerantowski.
Abby Wesselkamper broke the deadlock in the 77th minute, placing a shot in the right corner of UTM’s net after slicing through the Skyhawk defense. The final sing of life from the Skyhawks came in the 82nd minute in the form of a shot by van der Vliet that rang off the crossbar.
With the loss, the Skyhawks drop to 2-3 on the season but will return home to face off against Jacksonville State (1-3) on March 23.
