In their final Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) matchup against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks (2-3-1), the Skyhawks (2-3-1) hung on for a grueling 110-minute grinder to snag a 1-1 tie.
For UTM, senior forward Alice Adams was the squad’s main offensive weapon. Adams amassed seven shots, with two of which being on target. The Skyhawks’ lone goal came in the 76th minute when Adams got a header on a cross from junior midfielder Hendrikje Baurmann, giving the Skyhawks a brief lead that was erased almost immediately.
The Skyhawks made life difficult for the Gamecocks’ defense, as UTM poured on 17 total shots, with eight being on target. Conversely, the Gamecocks’ offense wasn’t as potent, only registering 13 total shots, but was more efficient with seven shots on target.
In the following minute after Adams’ goal, JSU forward Gabriel Clarke capitalized off of a rebound following a blocked shot by fellow Gamecock Alicia Pallister, putting one past senior goalkeeper Erica Meyers.
The first overtime period was largely uneventful, aside from a yellow card assigned to sophomore midfielder Catey Hunt. Adams kicked off the second overtime period with a wide shot 36 minutes in. After a yellow card was extended to JSU’s Briana Eads, freshman midfielder Emely van der Vliet gave the Skyhawks once last chance to get ahead of JSU, but Vliet’s shot was saved by goalkeeper Morgan Lerch in the 109th minute.
Despite letting one goal slip, Meyers’ six saves rank second most on the season, and improve her save percentage to 78.6%. Meyers two saves in the 17th minute and five total in the first half managed to keep the Skyhawks’ head above water.
The Skyhawks will make the short trip to Cookeville, Tennessee on March 26 to take on the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles (3-3-0).
